Artist Registry FAQ
Artist Registry Questions & Answers
I already have a website. Do I need the Registry?
You may have spent a lot of time building your own website and don’t want to do a lot of extra work. However, NMC’s website gets 10,000+ Google searches each month, and our Registry draws hundreds of visitors who click through looking for art and specific artists. We want the NMC Artist Registry to connect others with you and your work. And we give them a link to your site!
Pro tip! Make this statement and bio different from your website’s, and vary the images shown there and on the Registry. This creates more interest for people looking at your work, and more results on online search engines.
Do I have to write a lot?
Do your best to communicate what motivates you to create, plus a short bio (not a full CV with awards, shows, etc — just a bit about yourself). Your artist statement and bio should be 1-4 paragraphs each. Write as if you were speaking to someone in person. Your passion for creating will come across!

Our volunteers work hard to check spelling, grammar, and so on — we’ll get in touch if we have questions. It always helps if you double-check text yourself before submitting.
I want to make changes to my Registry page.
Great! We want you to keep your page as up to date as possible. If you have new images or text about yourself that you want to share, use the Registry Submission Form to upload that info. You don’t need to fill the whole thing out again, just upload your name and any new files or information.
If you find a mistake in your Registry page, please use the Submission Form to update that for us.
Specialties vs Categories
The ”Specialty” on the form goes under your name at the top of your Registry page and is a primary identity and search term. It should be a noun, not a verb, not a title. If you are a painter, put Painting. If you also add mixed media to your 2-D paintings, put Painting and Mixed Media. If you make painted 3-D mixed media sculpture, put Sculpture or Mixed Media Sculpture. You don’t have to specify acrylic, watercolor, gouache, pastel, etc., in the Specialty unless you feel those are integral to your identity as an artist. Do put the different media you work with into your artist statement.
A new section, “Media Categories,” has been added to the form. Hundreds of artists are in the Registry, so this will help viewers find the kind of art or artists they are looking for. Choose categories that apply to your work.
How can I make sure my images look great?
First, create jpg files, each 1200 pixels tall. This ensures that your Registry page loads quickly and your full-page images display well.
If you don’t upload an image for the main Registry page thumbnail, we will choose one of your images that looks the best. NOTE: the system uses square thumbnails, so part of your image may be cropped here. We do try to minimize that.
The three images at the top of your Registry page can be clicked to display a full-size image. Depending on their size and proportions, these smaller versions may also be cropped, but this is rare. The full-page view will always show the entire image.
Video artist, performance artist, writer? Submit still images from your work, including book covers.
PRO TIP: Most images taken with phone/tablet can’t be sent to us as they are. Transfer them to a computer for more versatile tools (like Pixlr) or look for a mobile app (like ImageSize).
Your images will be renamed to our naming convention, so you don’t need to worry about the filenames.
Title, Size & Description
This information displays when the viewer hovers over a thumbnail or enlarged image. Give us your Title without quotes and with initial capitals, like Picnic At Hanging Rock.
Size should be height, width, and depth (if 3D) in inches. Example: 18 x 36 for a painting, or 18 x 20 x 6 for a ceramic sculpture.
The Description should be one line to include media or methods. Example: Watercolor, ink, and pastel on paper (no period at the end). If you want to further describe a work, include it in your artist statement.
Portrait of the artist
Some artists are shy about posting an image of themselves, but when people are interested in your work, they’re interested in you, too. Whether you take a selfie, a friend takes a pic, or a professional does your head shot, let people see you as well as your work. And let us know if you want or need to credit the photographer.
Can I include links to other websites?
We generally avoid links to galleries on your registry page. Gallery participation changes, and this can result in inaccurate information — that’s a dead-end for viewers, which you don’t want! We do offer the ability to link to one URL of your choosing, and we expect that to be your personal website.
We do put Facebook and Instagram addresses as long as the accounts are primarily used for your art postings. Don’t link to personal social media accounts.
Other social media are currently not used (linked-in, Twitter, etc.).
When will my page be posted/updated?
It takes us 2-7 days to create/update your page, depending on how complete & correct your submission is. You’ll get an email from us as soon as the page or update is live!
Every Registry page added or updated before the 25th of each month will be mentioned in the next newsletter.
